Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site is pleased to host “Music for a Winter’s Afternoon” with Flutestrings! on Sunday, March 5, 2023from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Enjoy music from six countries and six centuries featuring Renaissance, Baroque, and Opera arias from Mozart, Bizet, Puccini, and Verdi as well as music from Scott Joplin, original music by Pamela Sklar, and traditional Irish songs.
Flutestrings! is a collaboration between flautist and composer Pamela Sklar and violinist and mandolinist Joyce Rasmussen Balint.
Born in New York City, Pamela Sklar collaborates as a flutist and composer with ensembles presenting award-winning programs, recordings of original works and mixed styles of music. Described as “Engaging…piquant…stimulating…delightful” by the New York Times, Pamela toured as flute soloist throughout the USA and internationally for eleven seasons with French pianist-composer Claude Bolling and has performed on five tours of Japan with other artists. Other performance highlights have included collaborations with Alan Hovhaness, Dave Brubeck, Pulitzer Prize winner Karel Husa, and jazz legend Jack Wilkins.
Joyce Rasmussen Balint has been mandolin soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 1974. An active free-lance musician on both the violin and mandolin, she has performed with many musical organizations throughout Westchester and New York including the Chappaqua Chamber Orchestra and the New York City Opera. She has appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston and Tanglewood, and in New York on the mandolin in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, under Maestro James Levine. She has also performed with the Paris Opera in their production of Verdi’s Otello and the Dallas Opera in their production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Equally at home on violin and mandolin, she is a member of the Yonkers Philharmonic and a frequent soloist with orchestras and in recitals throughout the New York area and many parts of the USA.
