"Treason of the Blackest Dye: The true story of Arnold, André, and Three Honest Militiamen"

Temporary exhibit on display Wednesday, July 2 through Sunday, September 28, 2025

10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Wednesdays thru Sundays

This temporary exhibit, originally developed by Revolutionary Westchester 250 based on new research, takes a deep dive into the people and events behind Benedict Arnold’s treason and the capture and execution of British Major John André.

On September 22, 1780, U.S. General Benedict Arnold secretly turned over plans for the fortification at West Point to British spy Major John André. With these plans, the British might have captured West Point and turned the tide of the war.

By luck, local Westchester County militiamen John Paulding, David Williams, and Isaac Van Wart captured André, who was carrying the papers in his boot, as he passed through Tarrytown on his way to New York City, revealing Arnold’s treasonous plot. André was executed as a spy days later. Arnold made a narrow escape and defected to the British.

That may be the story everyone knows, but who were Paulding, Williams, and Van Wart? Who else was involved in the treasonous plot? What was actually in the boot papers? Explore these topics and more as part of this fascinating temporary exhibit.
